National Governments

Entries for this section are based on an analysis published by the Pew Research Center in March 2023 that examined the number of women leaders among 193 member states of the United Nations since the end of World War II. Thus we are not including the number of years, as it would be the same for all countries. The data comes primarily from the Council on Foreign Relations Women's Power Index, which was last updated March 29, 2021. The Pew Research Center updated these figures through March 1, 2023, using independent sources and filtered to include only women heads of government, as defined by the country"s political system or constitution. Depending on the country, “head of government” could mean president or prime minister, but not both. In limited instances, this leader may not be the one who exercises the most power in their current government. We are including countries where a woman has served as monarch, regent or interim head of state in Man Planet because our definition of a national government “run by a woman” is limited to those where the head of state is elected or appointed in a deliberate process that is intended to reflect the will people and where she is expected to serve a full term in office.
